Flock CEO Garrett Langley reportedly blamed Russian bots for much of the backlash against his license-plate cameras, according to 404 Media’s October 26 reporting on a recording from a private police conference. The outlet says he supplied no evidence for that explanation. We have not independently authenticated the recording. You thought you were a resident asking who can track your car. Under this theory, you may instead be an unpaid extra in an international influence operation. Very efficient: the camera reads your plate; the public-relations strategy reads your mind. The underlying privacy argument does not disappear because someone alleges bots. Before upgrading ordinary criticism into geopolitics, a little evidence would be useful. Surveillance is rather keen on collecting it from everybody else.
