Pichai Wants More Than a Chatbot Win

Sundar Pichai has a bigger pitch for Google’s AI. Your health, your weather, your education, your work. Quite a shopping list.

Google’s September 15 update brought these ambitions together. The message reaches well beyond Gemini’s chat window.

AlphaGenome Atlas predicts the molecular effects of nine billion possible single-letter DNA changes. Academic researchers can explore it for free. That gives them promising places to investigate. The experiments still have to happen.

WeatherNext 3 brings hourly forecasts built with fresh satellite observations. Google is putting it into Search, Maps, and Gemini. You might use its AI simply by checking whether to carry an umbrella.

Then comes language. Google puts the reach of its language technologies at roughly 300 languages, spoken by seven billion people. That is potential reach. Seven billion paying customers would be quite another announcement.

There is an awkward detail in Google’s own AI & Economy ATLAS research. A survey of more than 600 scientists in the US and UK found reported time savings of nearly seven hours a week with AI. It also found a growing backlog of hypotheses waiting to be tested. Generating ideas got easier. Finding out whether they work still takes time.

My read is that Pichai wants Google’s AI built into work people depend on. A chatbot can lose your attention quickly. A useful research tool has a better chance of staying.

The ambition is clear. Nine billion predictions make a great headline. Turning them into discoveries is the expensive part. Google has plenty to show. It still has plenty to prove.
